The Gettysburg Address

It has been said that the three most written about events in American history are the Battle of Gettysburg (July 1863), the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln (April 1865) and the assassination of President John F. Kennedy (November 1963). President Lincoln's Gettysburg address of  November 1863 ties the first two events together and is our blog subject today.  We will look at President Kennedy's assassination on Friday.  The web site will give you the background on the speech.  It also has the text of the speech.

Here are some things to think about as you do your research and read the text.  Entertainment 150 years ago was much different from today.  There were no movies, computers, television, radio or major sports.  For entertainment people went to hear orators (Speakers) like Edward Everett.  It was expected that they would speak for hours on end.  Mr. Everett's speech that day lasted over two hours.  President Lincoln's speech lasted a little over two minutes.  Unfortunately there were no audio or video recorders to capture the speech.  Of course the Gettysburg address lives on today.  Mr. Everett's speech is forgotten.  After you have read the speech, watched the video and checked out the site, tell us what you think of this speech which is considered to be  one of the most important presidential speeches in American history.

President Lincoln’s speech was inspiring and powerful. I now know why this speech is considered to be one of the most important presidential speeches in American history. This speech makes me want to have been alive in President Lincoln’s time.

The Gettysburg address is one of the most important speeches of U.S history. I think one reason it’s so famous is because what it ties in with. It speaks about all the people that gave their lives to protect us and keep this country growing the way it already is. If those people didn’t give their lives for us those years then we wouldn't be here today. Another reason its famous is who wrote it, Abraham Lincoln. This man saved us in many ways and many people liked him for this very reason. I think writing the Gettysburg address made him twice as much famous then he already was. The Gettysburg address will live in probably for all of mankind.

Lincoln’s speech may have been short, but that is one of the most important speeches in our history. Lincoln didn’t just speak to the people of Gettysburg that day, he spoke to everyone. People today idolize that speech and strive to be as good as Lincoln. I wish that we could have a video or recording of him actually giving The Gettysburg Address. Lincoln seemed like a simple man and that is exactly how his speech was; short and simple.

I feel that the speech was very well planned and thought out. President Lincoln you can tell put his heart and soul into this speech. The speech was short and to the point. The heartfelt speech has now become a national treasure. This speech will forever be an important part of history.

I feel like that he put all he had into it. It was very well written. It was short but it got the point thru. And now after all these years it has become a national treasure.

I believe this speech is thought provoking in the sense that he speaks of equality and yet they are in a civil war about that very equality. He also speaks of the nation being divided and says that it may just be a test to see if they, as a nation, can agree on something so controversial. He even says that this type of war could happen to any nation and it would be up to them to decide whether they will split off as a nation or overcome their differences. Lastly, he believes that after the war there will be a new birth of freedom. Meaning he believes one day everyone will be free to lives their lives the God had intended.

Lincoln’s speech is one that not only speaks to the people of Gettysburg, who have suffered through so much loss, pain, and suffering due to the battle, but also to the American people as a whole. His speech was just over 2 minutes and yet it was so very powerful, motivational, and inspiring to those who had lost so much. This is why it is one of the most important presidential speeches, because it was not filled with a lot of fluff, it spoke to everyone, and was inspiring even to this day.

To my thought, I feel that he has really explained his thoughts to the public. I don’t think anybody else could have put it better than Lincoln. This is one of the greatest speeches in American history.

I think the Gettysburg speech was very great, it was an important speech. It says that all men should be created equally and I think that is very important. If Abraham Lincoln never said the speech, we probably wouldn’t be an equal country.

The Gettysburg address was an important piece of history no doubt, but a lot of the people miss the point of the speech. This speech took one of the most gruesome battles of the Eighteen Hundreds and he didn’t see it as that. He saw the battle of Gettysburg as a symbol a landmark something to look back on and see what Americans are willing to give up.

This speech is the greatest speech in the world. I like how is shows the Americans of the United States what we have been through. The speech really shows how we got back on our feet, and won some great and hard battles.

I think this speech was very inspiring and important. It seemed like all the north needed to win the war was a very inspiring speech. But this speech had key factors that were sort of the north admitting its faults.

The Gettysburg Address is an inspiring speech, it was made to give a little bit of history of our country. I think that this speech was remembered because of the way it was spoken and said during the time that he gave it to the colonist and fellow veterans. It is always an amazing day to remember this speech because it inspires many to look up and follow their dreams.

Abraham's speech is considered one of the greatest speech of all times. I can see why it is. It is important because it talks about the men who fought for us. This speech just proves that it dose'nt matter how short or small something is it can still have just as much power.

I believe the Gettysburg Address is a very important part of America's history. It was written and presented in a time of America that was not fair or equal and in battle with each other. The speech shows the importance of unifying America and the great things to come of it.

The Gettysburg Address was one of the most powerful speeches in American History. It inspired a lot of people back then and a lot in our time period. The speech didn't point any fingers at anyone, but it admired all the men that served in the Civil war. It inspired our people to unify into one nation. Not with just Confederate states or Union States.

That speech was something really special. It honored the fallen soldier in a great way. It told about Lincoln's mission for the soldier that showed that he cared about his people. The Gettysburg Address is a piece of history we should never forget.

Today 150 years ago was the day of freedom for many people. Lincoln was one of the best presidents, in my opinion, because he freed the slaves and made the country one again. They did not have any rights until the Civil Rights Movement and are still disrespected today and will be until God comes.

I think that this speech is one of the most important. Not only did it honor the fallen soldiers, but it stated Lincolns mission to not let them die in vein. Abraham let the people know his mission and that the deaths were honorable and they died for a cause. Even though this speech was rushed because they let Lincoln in last minute it is one of the best speeches by a president.

The Gettysburg Address, I believe, is a very important speech in our history, even 150 years later. The crazy thing is that hardly anyone remembers that the main speaker for that day was Edward Everett. This speech helps us, as Americans, to remember those who have fallen in war. That speech will forever hold a place close to America's heart.

The Gettysburg Address is obviously a very important part of our history. It has been a part of America for years now, and it has a lot of meaning to us. It represents so much for America's people. Such as our freedoms, being equal and thanking the ones who have risked their life in the civil war for us. To this day we still learn and thank the Gettysburg Address. If it wasn't for all of the brave men, Abraham Lincoln, and most of history we wouldn't have the equality we have today.

The Gettysburg address is one of the important speeches of our home (U.S. of A.). I think it shows how brave people are in the world we live in. The most powerful man in American gave a 2 minute speech and it over powered the 2 hour speech. Even though it was 2 minutes long, it means a lot.
