They Can't do That to Us!

By now, you have probably heard the news that MacArthur Mall (Center) has a new policy in place that as of October 19, people under 18 will not be allowed in the mall past 5 pm unless they are accompanied by someone over 21. Read the press release. What do you think of this? Is it unfair or just an attempt to help merchants of the mall?

This video from a local television network seems to sum up at least the mall's side of the argument. Let's watch it. Here is another video. What do you think of the policy? Do you go to that mall, or to another one? Maybe you don't go to a mall at all. Please tell us what you think of the policy and how you will react to it.

The way I see it is that the mall is an "upscale" facility that want to attract customers with money to spend. They seem to think that unsupervised individuals under 18 might scare off customers. On the other hand, teens in this nation spend between $85 and $170 billion per year! That means that they are an important part of the national economy. Is it correct to potentially exclude them?

This new policy is going to hurt all the stores in the mall. Beacuse teens are one of the main consumers of the mall, taking them out of the mall will harm the stores. The stores will bring in less money so there will be less jobs to go around too.

I think that it is stupid because what if your parents have to work late and they don't get off until 5.Or what if it was Mothers Day and your dad sent you to the mall to get a gift for her. And what if you have money for your birthday and they have alot of stuff you want from MacArthur that they don't have in the other ones.

I love the idea of the new time for teens at MacAruthur Mall. I think it will be really safe for teens. Its not all about money its about safety!!!

This policy is ridiculous. MacArthur is going to lose a lot of money with this policy. I don't think it will last very long. I think they just need to get more security. That would probably take care of their minor problems with the youth.

Hello Mr. Downing, I think the curfew is stupid and pointless. I am 18 so I can be in the mall, but I think it’s going to hurt them the most because they are going to be losing out on all their money. I think they are going to lift the curfew because they can’t afford to lose money, we are already in a recession, they are not crazy to play around with the little money that they are going to have.

I think that the new policy is a bad idea because they are making the younger teens suffer others' consequences. But again some teens just need to grow out of their immature behavior.

I think the policy is ridiculous. They are forcing teens to shop at other malls. In the long run i think it will hurt MacArthur Mall the most.

I think the Mc Author rule is very wrong, because it’s taking away the good times from the teens. I think they need to just watch out for the people that are causing problems, and not take it out on everybody else.

This new policy is dumb. All it does is hurt everyone. The retailers, employees, parents and most of all teens. Teens will go to other area malls.

I think people are stupid. They're showing that they don't trust kids under 18. People need to think before they place stupid rules that don't make any sense.

It's the stupidest thing ever. 5:00 is way too early. It's not fair to the teens who don't cause problems. I don't think it is a good idea at all.

I think this curfew idea is very STUPID!!! Because teens have to be with their parents at all times. I also think it is stupid bacause your mother/and or father have to go in the same store as you. And you have to go in all the same stores as them. But I think it is going to hurt the mall the most because they will lose their best customers. And they will start losing a lot of money, because teens are the biggest spenders.

I think that the new rule is dumb. Most teens will not be able to go to the mall with their parents. The mall will lose money because more teens will not go to that mall and teens are the ones who spend their money at the mall.

I think that the policy they are having is very stupid. Because most of their customers are teens. Most of the times parents don't shop with their teenage kids. They are forcing teenagers to shop at other malls and stores. I think that their business will start to be cut short. I really don't care because I don't shop there, but I don't think its fair to the teens who do shop there.

MacAruthur Mall's new policy will hurt their own business as well as the teens who go there. Instead of getting rid of all teens after 5:00they should just get better security and target the ones causing the trouble. They need to realize that this policy is taking away our freedoms.

This curfew makes no sense to me at all. A lot of teenagers go there just to have fun. They don't all want to cause trouble. They're going to lose a lot of money because they are turning the teenagers away.

Sometimes, you just have to love corporate America. They are pretty much getting rid of an entire demographic of customers. Besides this, the aforementioned demographic one of the most violent generations to date. No matter what, this new policy has bad written all over it.

I think that it is an insult to the teenage customers to be not allowed in the mall after certain hours. I think that the kids should spend their money elsewhere. I hope MacArthur changes these rules.

I think that the curfew is a little stupid. If they're gonna make a curfew then it should be more like 9. Teens can still go outside the mall and get in trouble or just go to another mall.

I really think this is a stupid idea. We will just go to another mall and MacArthur will lose a lot of money. I understand what they are trying to do, but the curfew should be more like 10 if they even have one at all. This idea will probably turn out for the worst in the end. Also, the news people should learn how to spell people's names.

I think it's stupid because teens want to shop as long as they want like grown people. Instead of them getting in trouble they want to hang at the mall, but they can’t anymore because of curfew hours. It’s crazy to me because he is not giving examples how it’s safe for them to leave the mall than for them to be in the mall.

Five o'clock is way too early of a curfew. More dangers exist outside of the mall than inside. This may be the right of the mall but, this does not seem like a legitimate reason.

Mr. Downing, I despise the fact that we have a curfew in Mac Author Mall. I think that we should at least be able to stay in the mall until 9 or so, and also it’s hurting the mall stores. Without the teens in the mall the stores will go out of business, and pretty soon all the stores will go out of business.

This is way, way, way prejudiced. That older costumers are scared of us is not completely true. Most of the older people who complain are store owners. I know this from personal experience. I can understand the malls view too, but they need to kick out the teens who cause trouble, not all the teens.

I think its wrong that they're doing this because teenagers spend a lot of their time their. Now they will have to go somewhere else to spend their money. Now the mall and the stores in the mall will lose money.
