You may have heard of the Nebraska state law referred to as the Safe Haven Act. The law allows parents to leave a child at a licensed hospital without explaining why. The law was originally intended to allow only newborns and infants to be "abandoned." However, at least 14 children, including 7 teenagers have been left at Nebraska hospitals. Some of these children came from as far away as Georgia!
Recently the law was amended to set the age limit at 30 days.
What do you think of this? Should parents just be allowed to leave their children at a hospital? What about those teenagers who were left? If you were the Governor of Nebraska would you want the law to remain or be changed?

I think that it’s a crazy law, like who would leave their newborn?? I mean if they want to leave their kids couldn’t they just put them in a home?? I guess like if left at a hospital the people there would take better care of them or something, but I don’t really see the point. The thing about the teenagers is if you have a teen and you don’t want them, why would you leave them at a hospital?? I mean you could put them in an orphanage or a children’s home or something. Why would you leave them at a hospital?? If I was Governor of Nebraska, I guess the law would be okay but I just wouldn’t understand it.
To me this law doesn't seem right. Because I don't think you should abandoned your child. Unless your trying to protect your child. If I was the governor I would change the law so that the parents would have to explain why their abandoning their kid. And for the teenagers I feel sorry for because they are mature enough to know that their parents abandoned them.
I think that it is wrong that they are letting the children just be dropped off like that without giving any reason. The parents should not be allowed to leave their children at a hospital under any circumstance except if they are sick. The way I look at it is that you had the child now you have to take care of it. I think that the teenagers who were left are going to end up depressed and sad because their parents just abandoned them. The kids are going to wonder what happened to their parents, why did they just drop them off. If I was the Governor of Nebraska I would change the law or just take it away all together.
It is messed up that parents would do that to their kids; but what is more messed up that the hospitals don’t ask questions. No one needs to be left at the hospitals unless something is wrong with them. The hospitals should be ask-ing questions why those parents were just leaving the kids there. Those parents are terrible people and if I was the Governor of Nebraska I would have them arrested on the spot. You can’t have a heart if you can abandon a baby let alone an infant at a hospital. This whole topic is messed up.
I believe that in some cases if a parent cannot take care of their new born babies then they should be able to bring them there. It would be better to have the baby safe in a hospital then somewhere struggling to live. Overall, I would say that if a parent does not have stable income and is not ready for a child then they should think twice about it. Even though I don't think that it is right to just abandon a baby like that, I would rather have them safe in a hospital than somewhere not safe. If i was the governor of Nebraska then I think I would have done the same thing.
In my opinion that is just wrong to leave your child at a hospital without keeping up with what’s going on with your child in the hospital. When parents abandoned their kids it seems like they don’t care for them at all. Then when the children become adults then the parents would “say I’m sorry for leaving you like that”. If I did that to my child I would be ashamed of what I’ve done. If I was the Governor of Nebraska I would ban that law.
I have never heard of the Nebraska state law referred to as the Safe Haven Act. I have now realized that this allows parents to leave children at a hospital without explaining why. The law was originally for newborns and infants. What do I think of this? I feel that it can be good and bad in many ways. For example, if someone is unable to care for the child properly, they should seek help but in the child’s eyes it might feel as if they were abandoned. If I were the Governor of Nebraska I would definitely reconsider this new found law.
Some people just aren't ready to be parents. However, abandoning a child is not a good way to solve the problem, especially at a hospital; that is what an orphanage is for. As for the teenagers, that is just despicable. Why on earth would a parent raise their child and then just leave them? Even if the child had psychological problems or behavioral issues, the parent is still to blame. Children don't grow up to have problems. They are raised that way. If only we could make everyone take a test on parenting before they were able to reproduce. I know that sounds inhumane, but the children are the future, and some parents are ruining their children. Being abandoned, especially as a teen, can cause some severe psychological problems. I can only imagine what those teens must be thinking right now.
I think the “Safe Haven” law should have never been created. The idea to leave a child at a hospital is mind altering. Although hospitals are probably one of the safest places to be, it’s very wrong and disappointing. If a parent wants to leave their child at a hospital they should at least have a decent reason explaining why, not just because they felt like it, or didn’t want it. Also, the statement about the parents leaving teenagers at the hospital is ridiculous. If they raised the child to its teen years, which is the most difficult time in a child’s life, then they should be able to take care of the child a little longer. If I were the Governor of Nebraska I would want the law to be alternated a little bit. By saying this I mean the law should state that unless you aren’t financially prepared to take care of the child, you have to take it out of the hospital. Haven’t these people heard of adoption agencies?!?
I think it is very sad to leave a child at the hospital. No, I don't think any parents should leave their children at a hospital. Because the children might think that the parents don't like them anymore. I think the teenagers feel sad and angry that their parents left them in the hospital. Yes, I would change this law if I were the Governor of Nebraska.
I think that the Safe Haven Act is a very good idea. Parents that feel that they can’t give their child what they need or can’t give them a good home should be able to take the child to a place that will find a home for the child or provide them with what they need until they can find somewhere for the child. I feel that it should depend on the child’s age, though. If the child is under the age of 18 then they should be able to be helped. But if the child is over 18 then he/she needs to be helped to get on their feet and provide for themselves. If I was governor of Nebraska, I would definitely want the law to remain.
The Safe Haven Act could benefit society if some restrictions were put on what a person can and can’t do. A law should be made immediately that no one can abandon a teenager at a hospital. This not only is wrong, but also puts the burdensome teen in the hands of people who should be taking care of only abandoned babies. The only children who should be left at a hospital are newborn infants. I know I’d much rather see a baby left in a hospital then thrown in a dumpster. Overall, this act has potential, it just needs some modification.
I do not agree with the Safe Haven Act. I think that the act should not be allowed because of numerous of reason. No parents should leave their child abandon. When I think about the act and how parents leave their children I think about children being homeless. I think about the children who were left at the hospital and how they felt. Than I think about the smaller kids who didn’t know what was going on and how they felt as they got older. If I was the governor Nebraska I would not let the Safe Haven Act go on. Some of the reason why children feel bad and not loved is because of them being abandoned. One reason why children commit suicide is because they have been abandoned. As a governor of Nebraska I wouldn’t want this to happen.
This is a hard subject to come to an agreement on for me but my opinion is that if I were the governor, I would keep the law the same but different. No parent should ever give there child up, but I would rather see a child left at a hospital than on the side of the street. I think that before the parent re-sorts to violence of neglect, he or she should drop the child off at. This could also become a very bad situation. For in-fants it would be less of a problem because the parent knows from the start they will not be able to take care of the child, but after three or four, I think its wrong for parents to just drop the child off and never look back. This can become out of hand if two parents are not together and one parent gets mad at the other and decides to show it by giving the child away. Or if in a teenager’s case, the child has made a mistake and the parent tries to “teach the kid a lesson”. If this law is going to continue to work, the governor needs to change it to where the parent has to have a legitimate reason for dropping the child off and leave some kind of information on the child be-cause small children can’t speak for themselves.
I do not agree with this law. I can understand something being wrong with the newborns and leaving them there while being cared for; but I think that they should at least have to sign papers or something to let them know where their children should go after. It sounds like the parents who would just leave their children in a hospital are irresponsible. The teens, however, is a whole different situation because they are old enough to be able to speak up and all that. I do not think that the law is a good idea. If better organized maybe, it could work. Until then I think it is not a good law.
This state law would be good in some cases, but since people are abusing this law, it can be a bad thing. Parents I think should be able to leave their baby at the hospital, because some of the parents of the babies can not support their child, and want a better life for them. Teenagers should not be allowed to be dropped off. It is ridiculous to bring your teenage child to Nebraska. If you could not support them when you had them, bring them as a baby, not after you have raised and loved your child. If I were governor, I would keep this law, only because if this law was taken out, parents would find some other, worst place to leave their child. Keeping this law will protect many babies who could have been left in some dangerous places.
I think this law is effective to an extent. I agree with the idea of setting a thirty day age limit on the children. This prevents the child from being abused or abandoned at an age that they can not do anything to help or defend themselves. I think the main point of this law was for children whos parents may hurt them or possibly kill them because they could not take care of them or they did not want to. This law should not be for older children because if the parents did not want them anymore than they should put them into foster homes where they know they will be cared for and loved. I also disagree with this law because you should not just abandon your child and not give an explanation why. If I were Governor I do not think that I would have even made this law. The only exception would be the thirty day age limit.
I think this law was intended for children that the parents kill or abuse the children because they can not handle the stress or they just simply don’t want children. I think parents should be able to leave there kids if they can not handle the stress and think they are going to harm the children. Although I don’t agree with leaving a teenager, teenagers are almost adults and if there is a problem so great that the parents do not think they can handle the kids then the police should be called. If I was the governor I would want to change the law too kids under the age of one year old. This is an appropriate age because after one year of being with that child you are its mother physical and emotionally.
Though it is bad to abandon your own children, I believe that by giving them to a hospital you are probably giving them a better life. If you are going to give your child to a hospital, obviously you want them to have a better life than what you think you could give them. I'm not saying that the people who give up their children are bad people that will like abuse said child, but if you don’t want them at least give them to a place where they will be loved and cared for. The parents may be able to provide for the child but if you don’t want the kid you probably don’t love them as much as someone else would. So even though the law sounds messed up, I believe that it helps many kids by giving them parents that will love them more than anything.
In my own opinion I believe that parents should never leave their children or anyone else’s children at a hospital. You should never abandon your kids anywhere. If you have the kids and they are yours you should take responsible for them. You shouldn’t be allowed to leave anyone alone no matter what age they are. I strongly believe that the governor of Nebraska should do away with this completely. The governor should not be allowing for parents to just leave their kids at a hospital. A child or teenager should only be taken to a hospital if they need medical help or assistance. Parents should not be aloud to just leave their own children at a hospital or anywhere. Come on I would never want my parents to just leave me at a hospital and to never come back.
I think that it's the most craziest thing I ever heard of. Why would so called parents want to leave their children at a hospital? I think that is very wrong to do that, if your child is sick I could understand but you don't have to leave them alone. If they don't think they can take care their child there are orphanages on this earth. Children deserve to have parents that love them and care for them.It makes me upset to hear that these people are dropping them off like some charity donation at the Goodwill. If I was the Governor of Nebraska, I would not allow that to go on, the law would be changed or taken away.
I think this new law is not right and that it is wrong. No, parents shouldn’t just be allowed to leave their children at a hospital without a reason he or she did that. If that reason was stopping a mother or father too leave there child at the hospital, why can’t there just leave there child anywhere or just leave and not some back home? I think that the teenagers who were left at the hospital should be allowed too leave with a family member that can provide form them and not sent back too live with whoever left them there at the hospital in the first place. If I was the Governor of Nebraska I would change that law because it is not right for someone to do that.
Everyone has an option on certain things, and certainly we all will never agree on one thing. The “Safe Haven” law gets a lot of mixed emotions from me, one for all mothers it is not a choice to have a child, maybe because of rape, so maybe if those mothers cannot physically and emotionally take care of their baby that might be the best thing for their child. I feel for those teenagers, who have been with their parents for at least 12 years and to them they may fell well today mommy and daddy don’t want me. For them growing up must be a hard road, and for them to trust people must be hard. If I was governor of Nebraska to be honest I wouldn’t know what to do. I much rater see a child in a safe place than on a street, but this is a hard call.
If you leave a child at the hospital, you should always check on the child. The only reason a parent should leave a child at the hospital is if the infant is ill. And when children become teenagers it is just dumb to drop them off at a hospital, because then they are almost grown and out your hands anyway. So I thank that law is just crazy, and should be taken away.
I think that the law has some benefits, but it also has disadvantages. It is understandable for a struggling mother to leave her child because she doesn't have anything else to choose. I don't think that it is right for a family to leave a teenager at the hospital because it seems too unusual. I think that under certain circumstances newborns should be allowed because they cannot take care of themselves. Since children were left, it shows that they could not be supported. If I were the governor, I would keep the amendment on the law to 30 days old because someone will always try to make a mockery of it. For the families that cannot support older children, I would set up a different association that will give them assistance. I really don’t like that fact that the children can be dropped off without reason. Think about how you would feel, never knowing you real parents because there were no records. Although I don’t agree with everything that is associated with the law, I think it has some benefits.
I actually think that’s it’s in ok idea. But I think that it should be an age limit at 5 and up that could be left alone. 5 and under should have and parent, and you would have a time limit only 2 weeks you’ll have to come get your child. If I was governor of Nebraska I would change that law around just a little. To make it easier for the doctors, so the hospital wouldn’t be crowded.
It is so funny that parents would do that just not to take care of their kids. If people do not stop leaving their kids in the hospital people need help will never get it.This law is keeping people from being responible and that is truly sad. This is insane to ever think of a law like that. What is the world coming to.
Well first of all my opinion varies if a mother can not take care of the childe or children yes I believe that the child should be left there so somebody can give those individuals the love they need. However I don’t think that a mother should leave her child there just because she’s having a hard time. Family to me is a privilege, having a child should be a time to rejoice at what God has given you. In saying that I really don’t think the state should put a limit on the age because every child that’s not embraced by their own parents need to be embraced by someone. There are too many teens out here today who are on the streets and in serious trouble because no one decided to show they care so they found the most deadliest love there is and that’s the love of the streets.
