Symbols

Here is some food for thought.

You see them everywhere. Christmas Trees, Santas, Menorahs, candles, wreaths and lights. Yes, they are the symbols of the Holiday season. But, can city and town governments ban them in certain places?  The city of Boca Raton, FL has done exactly that in the library building.  Does the city have the right to do that, or does it violate the frights of the city's citizens.  pay attention as you watch the video and recognize that there is a place where holiday symbols can be displayed on city property.  Is that enough or even fair to all concerned.

Here is your assignment: Watch the video and let us know what you think of the city government decision to ban holiday symbols in the library.  Do you agree or disagree?  Make sure that you proofread and give us three (3) sentences!

I agree with the city. Everyone has their own beliefs and celebrate different holidays. You shouldn't be able to put up religious holiday decorations such as Christmas, Easter, and Hanukkah. It's a matter of respecting people's beliefs. You might not like it if someone put up a bunch of decorations you find offensive.

I think it is mean to not let people celebrate christmas in there workplace. They sould let them put a tree up. And celebrate

I think if the library doesn't want to put up Christmas decorations, they shouldn't have to. The citizens should respect their decision. It's only fair.

I think it is a awful idea. They should let christmas lights be put up anywhere. It is a holiday to celebrate something religous.

I don't think the city should ban such things. It's the holidays decorations should be out. I disargree with the library, but it's not my decision.

I believe that, although it doesn't coincide with my own beliefs, the city has the right to ban Christmas decorations. Not everyone celebrates Christams and shouldn't be forced to be surrounded by it in a public, local government run building, such as a library. I believe that it doesn't make much difference; Christmas decorations are already everywhere else; but it is the city's right to make the decision to ban it.

Alexis Sinclair said...

While I believe that banning decorations is wrong, the city does have complete rights to take them away. Not everyone celebrates Christmas around the world and it could offend those who don't. I would want the decorations no matter what, but that's just me.

I don't think the city should ban these things. All of the Christmas decorations put you in a good mood and give you holiday cheer. Without them, the holidays aren't the same.

I think this is a stupid idea. Everyone should be aloud to decorate for christmas and put up what they want too. Everyone needs to celebrate Christmas!

I htink that the city should rethink the ban. People love to see trees and and thigns for hanak around to show the difference between xchristmas and Honack. Because people love to see the christmas cheer everywhere they go, because that is what makes people different no matter what they cheerbreat.

I think that it is insane to take away the decorations in public places. I understand that you should respect all religions, but that implies that you should respect that there are Christmas trees in places that you go. People love the Holidays and if some decorations ruin them for you, you should probably see a doctor.

Heath said...

So they just want to end fueds or something. The holidays show all of them not just one. Mabey if it's like that then don't show anything at all.

Anonymous said...

I think they are wrong.People love the holidays. I just dont like it you should respect all religions.

They should not be able to take away decorations. Everybody should respect everyones religion. This is stupid. A lot of people love the holidays and the decorations.

I think it's a bad idea. They cant band celebrating the holidays. People want to celebrate Christmas.

Honestly if they do not want to participate in decorating for holidays, so be it. It is their choice. I don't think it is a big issue either way.

Alyssa said...

I think they should be able to decorate however they want to. It should't be an issue. You can decorate for whatever hoilday you wish.

I DISAGREE 100% . Everyone should be able to enjoy Christmas with lights', trees', candles', etc. By taking these stuff away isn't the Christmas spirit, it makes no sence to me.

I don't think they should necessarily ban Christmas tree's and all those things. But its just in the public buildings. It's not like they're telling everyone that they can't put up lights and things in their own homes. I get that they don't want the conflict between different religions going on in their public places.

I truly disagree with this decision. I believe that they should decorate the library however they want. This United States of America, a free country. There's nothing wrong with having holiday decoration in a library! Holidays bring everyone joy.

Kayla Barnes said...

I think Christmas lights and decorations give people a since of happiness & joy. In my opinion people should be able to put up decorations wherever they want to. But if the library doesn't want to the people in the city should respect their descision.

I think it was stupid what the city did. You should always be able to express your beleif's no matter what. I think it's time for people to stand up in what they believe in not what society thinks is right.

I think the city can do whatever they want, it's their city. If they don't want to put up christmas things then they don't have to. Because everybody doesn't believe the same things. Although it would be cool to see places decorated, I feel bad for those people

McKenzie Patrick said...

I disagree with this decision. Freedom of religion is one of our first amendment rights, and it should not be taken away. People are becoming too sensitive to things around them. I wish some people would just deal with it instead of causing others not to be able to express their beliefs. It is ridiculous.

Chris Funai said...

I dont think it is right for them to go away with christmas decorations. It's the holiday, and everyone has the right to put up what they want. It is wrong that they arent spreading the spirit, and putting up the decorations.

Miranda said...

I think the city shouldn't ban Christmas decorations. Some people like seeing the different ways to decortate. Little children also like looking at the trees and lights and other decorations. Even though some people don't celebrate Christmas they still shouldn't stop decorating. Instead they could put up less decorations. They could even put up decortations for other holidays people celebrate. And it's not like your disrespecting other religions.

I dont think they should banned Christmas materials. At the same time, you have to be considerate with other people feelings and thier belief. Otherwise, I LOVE Christmas :)

I think that the city shouldn’t have banned holiday decorations on public places. Everyone has their own belief and religion and should be able to express it whenever and however they want. If the city was expressing everyone’s holiday ideas then there was no need to band holiday decorations in public places. The city was upset because they were getting complaints about the decorations from some people now they are getting more complaints because majority of the people want to see them. If the library didn’t want to put up decorations they didn’t have to but if other places in that area wanted to they should be allowed to. This should'nt be allowed because it's stopping human rights.

Erica McKay said...

How can they do that to the library and no other buildings? I think there is probably Christmas books in the library do those have to go to? Why does it even matter?

Jacob Watson said...

I definately disagree with the decision made by the officials to "give-up" because they are tired of fighting to allow CHRISTMAS (which is an actual Holiday which should be celebrated freely just as New Years, President's Day, Birthdays, and any other day of the year) to be announced and be shown in season with decorations and symbols used in public buildings. First, they obviously didn't try hard enough to argue back against the decision or enforce their power allowed by their position. Second, isn't this a time of love, cheer, and happiness? People that argue that others shouldn't be able to show their feelings such as a few holiday symbols, should also agree that people shouldn't allow an expression of gay feelings, legalizing drugs, etc. It may be a decision for the best of the community and city but it completely disagrees with the freedom and rights allowed to the people of this country. I thought we were better than other countries around the world.

kevante said...

Why did they ban it? If its a public facility, shouldn't the public be able to decorate as it pleased. I understand if its privately owned then its up to the owners.

I agree and disagree with the city's decision. I agree with them because, like it's their city...they can choose if they want to be in the Christmas spirit or not. I disagree because some people are into the spirit and have their beliefs.Other people should be considerate about it. Both dcisions can be right.

I strongly disagree with them on banning christmas decorations. I think it violates the citizens rights for celebrating a national holiday. Plus I think it prohibts some people to celebrate their heritage and religion beliefs.
