I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas

Maybe you have heard the song "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas."  Sung by 10 year old Gayla Peevey in 1953, this novelty song was a big hit that year.  You may have this song recently playing on one of the local radio stations that are playing Christmas music.

A novelty song is one that  is  a comical or nonsensical song.  It is designed to be funny and get you to smile or at least laugh.  Did it have that effect on you?  What do you think of the song?  Do you want a hippo?  Remember to give us at least three sentences.  Enjoy your weekend.

I liked this video.

The internet in here has been running really slow, so I didn't get to listen to the whole song. There are so many novelty songs now that they get old. I also don't like Christmas music that made me dislike the song even more.

I don't really understand this song. But it sounds preety cacthy. And people must like it because they stil play it on the radio.

I think the song is cute. I wouldn't want a hippo as a gift though. I don't know any child who would want a hippo for Christmas.

I remember my mom and I singing this in the car on the radio when I was younger. I always thought it was cute and funny, and still do. And yes, yes I would like a hippo.

I think this song is catchy. I like novelty Christmas songs. They put a smile on my face. Plus, Christmas is my favorite holiday.

The songs a classic, but the video made no sense. Was it to make a point or something? I think it's a sense of want a gift badly.

Christmas is my favorite holiday as well and all Christmas music brings a smile to my face, but especially silly songs like this. I can remember being very young taking tap classes and our winter performance was to this song. It's very cute.

If that girl wanted a hippopotamus for christmas she would get crushed. A hippopotamus is not a pet that people can have in they house. This girl is a strange one, and she does not want a little droll, or a droll.

It's a catchy holiday song, and I could see how some people like it. I would love to have 3 hippopotamuses in a moat around my house; I think that would be cool...is that legal? The song was good and I doubt that anyone would get a hippopotamus for Christmas.

I did not this like song at all. I found it annoying and not intellegent. Other people might find it funny and amusing, but I did not, I do not want a Hippo for christmas.

I didnt laugh, but it does make me smile. When she says "I only like Hippopotamusses" is probably the funniest part to me. I've heard the song so many times that its not that funny anymore, but its still a lovely Christmas traditional song! I cant wait for Christmas!

The song is kinda catchy and cute but it's really long-_-. I wouldn't want a hippo for Christmas tho. I like penguins and leopards better!

The song made me smile. I think it is cute and funny, and it is now stuck in my head. Hippos are cute when they’re babies, but when they’re old they are scary and ugly.

This video is so funny and catchy. It is one of the catchiest christmas songs ive heard. I wouldn't want to have a hippo under the tree.

I think this song is stupid. I've heard it before and never have liked it. Nobody would want a hippo for christmas. It is catchy though.

To me this song represents the endless imagination of a child. I don't care for the song much, but I guess I'm not one to crush a childs' imagination.

This song is kind of catchy. The song even made me smile a little so I guess it did what it was made to do. I wouldn’t actually want a hippopotamus for Christmas, because there not very cute at all.

Do you reaaly think I would want a hippo for christmas? All the stuff it would break, all the poop you would end up cleaning up, and probably more stuff but I dont really want to list those things. But in other words, no I would never want to have a hippo for christmas. Let your parents buy something cool and fun that you would accually use.

Christmas Songs are such a big part of Christmas Spirit. I myself LOVE Christmas and it happens to be one of my favorite times of the year. This song, which i've heard many times before, always makes me smile. It shows that the Christmas season might include "wanting", but it always brings the child out of all of us and allows that one time of the year for most people to see their families. A Hippopotamas may be an extensive present but we all want something different!
