Dr. Seuss

There is probably no more well known or loved author than Dr. Seuss. We have read his books many times over and watched the TV show "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" too many times to recall. Have you seen it this holiday season? I watched it the other night and it was as funny as ever. But who is/was Dr. Seuss? Did he do anything special (besides writing great children's stories?)

Your assignment for today is a bit different than most blogs. I want you to write a two paragraph biography of Dr. Seuss! Use your research skills to find out about him and then tell us about him.

Please note that you will need to proofread. You might consider writing it in word first, then pasting it to your blog post. Remember it is two paragraphs. Oh and by the way, make sure that it is your own work!

Here is a video to get you ready to find out more about Dr. Seuss!

Extra credit to the first person who can tell me who sang the song "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch."!

Theodor Seuss Geisel, known to the world as Dr. Seuss, was born in 1904 on Howard Street in Springfield, Massachusetts. His father, Theodor Robert, and grandfather were brewmasters in the city. His mother, Henrietta Seuss Geisel, often soothed her children to sleep by "chanting" rhymes remembered from her youth. Ted credited his mother with both his ability and desire to create the rhymes for which he became so well known for. His father wanted him to be a college professor. He went to Oxford University in England after graduation. After returning to the United States, Ted began to pursue a career as a cartoonist
The Cat in the Hat, developed as part of a unique joint venture between Houghton Mifflin and Random House. Houghton Mifflin asked him to write and illustrate a children's primer using only 225 "new-reader" vocabulary words. Because he was under contract to Random House, Random House obtained the trade publication rights, and Houghton Mifflin kept the school rights. With the release of The Cat in the Hat, Ted became the definitive children's book author and illustrator.

Theodor Seuss Geisel was born on March 2, 1904, in Springfield, Massachusetts to Henrietta Seuss and Theodor Robert Geisel. This is the man every one called Dr. Seuss. Suess was caught drinking gin with nine friends in his room, violating national Prohibition laws of the time.During WWII, Dr. Seuss was The Commander of the Animation Dept of the First Motion Picture Unit of the United States Army Air Forces.

Like you should know by now, Dr. Seuss authored a bunch of children stories during his life, including, The Lorax (1971), about environmentalism and anti-consumerism; The Sneetches (1961), about racial equality; The Butter Battle Book (1984), about the arms race; Yertle the Turtle (1958), about anti-fascism and anti-authoritarianism; How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (1957), about anti-materialism; and Horton Hears a Who! (1954), about anti-isolationism and internationalism.[9][15] Shortly before the end of the 1972–1974 Watergate scandal, in which United States president Richard Nixon resigned, Geisel converted one of his famous children's books into a polemic. "Richard M. Nixon, Will You Please Go Now!" was published in major newspapers through the column of his friend Art Buchwald.

Dr. Suess was a phenominal artist. His works mostly consist of childrens' books. He was most admired for How The Grinch Stole Christmas, and Green Eggs And Ham.
He was born on March 2, 1904,in Massachusetts. He was very patriotic and served in WW2. despite this, he kept his idealistic view of the world, with the books as a way to express his political views. Though he went through a time period of being affected by what he had seen in war and becoming racist towards Japanese-Americans, he later apologized and dedicated a book to a Japanese friend.
