Beyonce vs NASA

Happy New Year.

As  you may know, I am a  fan of Beyonce and her music.  She is hugely talented and genuinely seems like a decent person, one of those people you like to have as a friend.  She is also noted as one of the most charitable celebrities in America.  So, what's not to like about her?

Beyonce, however is involved in a bit of controversy with NASA over the use of a clip from the 1986 space shuttle Challenger disaster in her most recent hit "XO."  Listen to her song and  watch the video clip from the Challenger disaster .

In late January 1986, the Space Shuttle Challenger lifted off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida.  At seventy three seconds into the flight it exploded killing all seven crew members, including America's first teacher in space; Christa McAuliffe. The Space Shuttle program was relatively new and the launches were covered live on CNN and other networks.  So not only did the people at the launch witness the disaster, millions watching it on TV saw it also.  One of those was your teacher, a young Navy Lieutenant who would be deploying on a ship later that afternoon looking for and retrieving parts and pieces of the shuttle from the Atlantic Ocean.

Your assignment after watching the videos and reading the links is this:  Is Beyonce insensitive to include this short clip in her song?  Is her apology enough?  Do you agree with those who say she should pull the song out of respect for the memory of the Challenger astronaut's families?  Remember to proofread!

That was a very sad video, seven people died for no reason. It will probably be remember forever for all the people watching that day. Beyonc’e did a fine job with the song I don’t think she should change it in any way. In the song she sings about trying to get people to feel better about the situation. A lot of times you have to get up and forget before you can think positive again

Beyonce should apolagize, but I don't think it matters if she pulls it out, it is already over youtube and other media. What I can say, is that she could just not get paid for it, but that also would not be fair. So in a way, this can't be stopped even if she pulls it out, it is already over the internet.

I don’t think Beyonce meant any harm in putting this short clip in her video. Her apology should be enough for people. I guess she should take it out of her video only because to respect of the Challengers families.

I don’t think Beyonce meant to offend anyone. She probably did not think it would bother anybody, I don’t think she should pull the song. If anything she should just take the part about the Challenger out. I didn’t get to read about her apology due to the website being blocked, but I’m sure she was sincere. I like Beyonce because she seems like she is a very nice person who cares about her fans. This situation is just a misunderstanding and I know Beyonce is very sorry for offending the families of the loved ones they lost.

Honest I think there is nothing wrong with what she did. But to the families they may not feel the same they may feel it was disrespectful. Her apology should be enough because honestly I don’t think she meant anything by it. I'm pretty sure she meant no disrespect.

I believe that her apology should be enough, she probably didn’t mean any harm when she added that into her song. I actually like the song very much but I did wonder what was the beginning part all about and now I know! It was only about 6 seconds long, so I think NASA shouldn’t be all that concerned about it. I just think she should apologize and all of it will be over with.

In honor of the people who died in the space challenger explosion and she should take that song down. And they should be filled in with another video. Because it just wrong to hurt those families who suffer.

They say she was just trying to reach out the people mostly affect by the Space Shuttle Challenger event. I would say that she was just doing that, but it just seems so random for her to make a song about it now. Not to say that she shouldn’t have, but maybe if she had been more public about the meaning of the song this could have been avoided.

I think she was not trying to offend anyone. I also think that they should take this song down. She should apologize to them. It will probably not mater it is out there for the world to see.

I don't believe that she was trying to offend the astronauts' families. She should apologize but I don't believe the song should be pulled. At most she should just edit the video and crop out the clip of the space shuttle.

I don’t think Beyonce meant to offend anyone. But I do think that she should edit the video or just take it down so it won’t offend anyone. Whether she gets in trouble or not I do think morally the clip is a bad move to put in the video.

It is so sad to watch seven innocent people to die. Especially if they had family members there that saw the explosion. I don't think Beyonce meant to offend anyone, but I think if she see's that there is a problem then yes I think she needs to apologize even if she didn't mean to offend anyone. I really like the song because she talks about trying to make the people feel better about the situation. The video is already worldwide and mostly everyone saw the video or heard the song. In my opinion its already to late but not to late for her to apologize and be the bigger person.

I don’t think that she meant it in a bad way. It was meant just for the beginning of the song. The video of the shuttle exploding was sad. She maybe shouldn't have put it in the song but she probably didn't mean it.

Beyonce’ is a nice person and she is really respected. However, I think that she did not know how the outcome of her song would turn out because of what she said about NASA. On the other hand she did fix the situation in another way by instead of changing her song she apologized for what she has done.

I honestly don’t have an opinion on this matter, It doesn’t affect me in any way and I don’t honestly care what Beyonce does in her videos. She can put whatever she wants into her videos and people should respect the fact that she is expressing herself, One of her constitutional rights.

I don't think that beyonce meant anything bad by putting it in her video. She probably didn't think it would upset anyone or start a situation. Some people may think it was wrong or disrespectful, but I think that there's nothing wrong with what she did

Beyonce probably didn't intend to offend anyone by putting the short clip in her video. I think that she should keep it on there because it isn't bad to have it up there, it makes people remember it more. She should apologize to the people she might have offended, but she might have chosen to put it in there being respectful to the crash.

Yeah, I don't see anything wrong with her putting that part of the clip in the video. I guess they're saying that it is disrespectful and I can see how they say that it is because people died and families were hurt very bad by the explosion. But, other than that I see nothing wrong with this. Maybe she just wanted it because it made her song better and sounded better. Whatever happens she's not going to loose any fans or sleep over it.

I'm sure Beyonce didn't mean to offend anyone. There is no point in taking the video down after its already all over the internet and people have seen it. I think an apology is enough.

I dont think Beyonce meant to offend anyone. I can not tell if she meant to use the song in memorey or not. The families may not like the clip being used. If they have anything to against it. It should be taken out. If not leave it in. I do not think the whole song should be pulled. Lots of people like this song. It is already out there in media.

In my point view, Beyonce did nothing wrong. She probably thought it wasn't going upset anyone. I feel bad for everyone, who lost a love one, when the shuttle exploded.

I don't think that this was meant to hurt anybody. Although I do believe she needs to apologize to the familes and loved ones of the people that died on that crash. I also think that pulling out the song would be too late.

I think they should just re-do the music video without the clip in it. I doubt it was just her idea to put it in there in the first place. She also did apologize so I don't think people should be getting as upset, but, it shouldn't of been put in the video in the first place.

I don't think Beyonce meant any harm putting the video clip in her video. Although it wasn't a wise choice because those families still are mourning and miss their loved ones. Just think if a loved one of yours died that day with you watching how would you feel? Taking it out wouldn't help but it shouldn't have been in it in the first place.

I really don't think Beyonce meant to offend people. She probably just did'nt think it would harm anyone. She should just take the part about the Challenger o0ut of the video. It would be best to do to show respect to the families of the challenger. I like Beyonce's music. If you know most of her songs you would know that this song was a misunderstanding. I bet it hurts her to know that she has offended many families out there in the world and she is really sorry.

This really was a shocking and terrible event but, I don't think it was Beyonces idea to include this in here video. I do think that they should remove it and edit the video though. It just brings back sad memories of this event that people don't need to be reminded of.

I think that Beyonce should apoliogize for what she said about the Challenger's passengers and family members. Beyonce should think twice before saying anything about people and things. NASA should look into their technology more before launching the spacecraft.

I do not agree with them, that she should pull the video because of a short clip. Yes what happened was very sad and I'm sure this does upset the families. But, that is in the past and I honestly do not think she meant any harm by including it.

Tabatha Davis said...

I do not believe that Beyonce intent was to bring up any memories to hurt or offend anyone. However, I do believe that after she realized the hurt it did cause, an apology should be in order. I don't believe pulling the video will solve anything because the damage is already done.

That was a very terrible event. I don't think Beyonces video disrespected the families of the astronauts. She might have put it in her song to share the horrific memory and show respect. If the families feel it is disrespectful then I think it's only right for her to take it out of her song and do more than just apologize.

I really don’t think Beyonce was try to be mean in anyway. She was just try to make another huge hit. But at the same time I don’t think it would be a big deal if she just took it out.

I think that the apology is not enough. And she should take it off the internet. The seven people’s family and the teacher's family might be insulted. Space shuttles normally don’t blow up or fail, but there is that risk that astronauts must take.

I don’t think she was trying to hurt anyone, I think that it was put in her video just because. I think she shouldn't apologize if it was put in her video just for sounds in the background.

I think that she should not even have made a video about it in the first place. They should have known that it would upset people. I don't think she meant to hurt anybody by making the video about it.

Wow, that second video was sad. The seven people will most definitely be remembered. I really don't think Beyonce meant no harm by making the video with the shuttle in the background. Should she apologize? Well, yes if the other people think it was disrespectful.
