Saint Patrick's day

Today is Saint Patrick's Day. A day of leprechauns, shamrocks and green rivers! Maybe you wore green today. Maybe you did not. If you did not wear green, did anyone pinch you? Did you know that the Saturday before Saint Patrick's Day is referred to as "Snake Saturday" in some parts of the United States.

Here is a good site for researching St. Patrick's Day including some American and Irish traditions. We will also be watching a couple of the associated videos. So here is your assignment. After the videos, create your post. In your paragraph, tell us some of the history of the holiday, and name a city that dyes its main river green!

Saint Patrick's day is celebrated on the 17th of March becuase that's when Patirkc, died. The tradition is to eat boiled bacon and potatos. The real color of Saint Patty's day is originaly blue, but because of the landscape in Ireland they wear green. St. Parick's day falls on the Christian season of Lent. The Chicago River dyes it's major river green on Saint Patrick's day.

The holiday itself is not all the stories make it out to be. It was not a time where the literal snakes were chased out of Ireland, but rather figurative snakes, as in the Pagans. St. Patrick (who which the holiday is named after) is known for converting Irish Catholics into Christians. Though the story of dying the rivers IS true, for every year for the past 40 years, plumbers have dyed the Chicago River green.

Saint Patricks Day is Celebrated on the day March 17th because on this day Patrick died. This day would usuaully be celebrated with the color blue, but green then came along because, Patrick used the green shamrocks and the landscape of Ireland was mostly green. On this day the Irish family would traditionally attend church in the mornings and in the afternoons. They would usually celebrate with dancing, drinking, and feasting. Their meals for the day usually consisted of Irish bacon and cabbage. This holiday is very religious.

The first Saint Patrick’s Day Parade took place in the U.S., not Ireland. It’s a tradition to wear green in remembrance of the three leaf clover, which represented the Holy Trinity. Saint Patrick’s Day is a holiday that is celebrated not only in Ireland, but all over the world. The Chicago turns is annually died green, this tradition started in 1962. That year, they used 100 pounds of green vegetable dye to make the Chicago River green. I personally did wear green today to avoid being pinched.

Chicago dies its river green every year on St. Patrick’s Day. This holiday started because Saint Patrick was kidnapped by Irish raiders and taken captive to Ireland. Then he ran away back to Britain. Upon returning, he became a priest. Then he returned to Ireland to preach Christianity to the Irish.

The day that Saint Patrick died, March 17th is when we celebrate St.Patrick's day. It is celebrated by parades, the drinking of beer and wearing of green. It started when St.Patrick became a preist and returned to Ireland after, escaping from slavery there, to convert the Irish to Christianity. The original color associated with St. Patrick's Day is blue. Also the myth that St. Patrick chased literal snakes out of the island is false. It is assumed that it is referring to the Pagans. The first St. Patrick's Day celebrated in the United States was celebrated in New York City on March 17, 1762. The Chicago River has been died green every year for the past 40 years by plumbers in Chicago. It is celebrated on March 17 because that is the day St. Patrick died.
